Chapter 5
“I am glad he's dead. I could not stand him.” Sister Adams' harsh words were not nearly as severe as the contempt she held for Pastor Williams. The frown that often covered her face was as solid as ever. Over the years, she had grown from deeply admiring and confiding in Pastor Williams to being only one of few people who despised him. She stood in front of her kitchen stove. She had prepared a plate of warm grits cooked creamy style with milk, butter, and cheese. Bacon, ham, and scrambled eggs were neatly arranged on the plate with the grits. She covered two hot, homemade buttermilk biscuits with butter and placed them in a small plastic container. She poured warm syrup on a separate plate.
“No. You don't mean that.” Sister Cynthia Winters shook her head.
“Yes. I mean it.” Sister Adams realized Sister Winters knew she was not fond of Pastor Williams. And she knew Sister Winters had no idea that she wished the pastor harm. Sister Adams reached for the bacon she had recently fried. “Care for a piece of this bacon? It's the good kind. It has the rind on it.” Sister Adams passed a plate with a few strips of bacon on it to her friend.
Sister Adams was an excellent cook. She added just the right seasonings to foods to make irresistible meals. She served on the hospitality committee at First Baptist Memorial Church, and she often found herself preparing meals for needy individuals. “Pass me that liquor bottle. I need one more strong sip before we leave.”
“I still cannot believe you just said that.” Sister Winters passed the bottle of liquor to Sister Adams. “You sure you want to spend the rest of your day with alcohol on your breath?” She crunched a bit of bacon.
Sister Adams poured herself a tiny sip of alcohol. “Let's not get into my drinking habits.” Sister Adams sipped the alcohol.
“I am only trying to help.” Sister Winters crunched again.
Sister Adams ignored Sister Winters' remark. She continued, “Believe it. And I'll say it again. I'll even say it louder.” Sister Adams did just that. She yelled. “I am glad he's dead! I am glad his black behind is dead.” She poured herself another tiny sip of alcohol. “I cannot wait until this day is over.” She swirled the alcohol around in the glass. “I am going to relax with a few more of these tonight.” The glass of liquor pressed against her lips. She sipped. She savored it for a moment then swallowed. She placed the leftover bacon and ham in the refrigerator.
“I know you did not like Pastor Williams. But I did not know your feelings were that strong. I realize you are so sensitive when it comes to him. But I did not know you would be glad to see him gone.” Sister Winters remarked. “This bacon is good. I am going to grab one more piece. Those hot biscuits look so delicious. Can I have some of those too? Do you care?”
“Go ahead.
